COMMONWEALTH Secretary General Don McKinnon arrived yesterday for a two-day visit, writes Felix Osike.

He was received by foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa at Entebbe Airport.

Mckinnon visited a women’s handcraft development project at Bandwe in Wakiso district. The project, run by women who engage in making handcrafts, is supported by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation.

“It is wonderful for me who spends most of my time locked up in office in London to come and see what you are doing here. My role is to make sure that the work we are doing benefits people in all the commonwealth countries,” McKinnon said
He said the secretariat aimed at improving the lives of the people in the 54 member countries.

McKinnon advised the women to brand their products before export. He is accompanied by the Commo-nwealth Secretariat director of communications, Joel Kibazo.

Today, McKinnon will address a press conference at Sheraton Hotel at 10:00am before meeting President Yoweri Museveni.
McKinnon will later give a public lecture at Makerere University.

Uganda is expected to host the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting, which is usually attended by one third of the world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth 11, the head of the Commonwealth.
