THE army foiled three LRA rebel attacks on three displaced persons’ camps and killed 22 rebels in Gulu and Kitgum districts, during different battles on Friday.
UPDF 4th division commander Col. Nathan Mugisha said nine Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels were killed.
“We killed nine rebels and recovered seven guns north of Koch-Goma, south of Koch-Goma, north of Anaka and at Olam-nyungu, southwest of Atiak IDP camp in Kilak county all in Gulu,” Mugisha said.
He said the UPDF mobile troops were still pursuing the splinter groups of the LRA rebels, who were roaming in the district with the intention to sneak into the camps to kill and abduct residents or loot food.
The army said some other rebels were killed at Ayago Bridge in Murchison Falls Park on Karuma-Pakwach road and four others were killed when the UPDF 37th battalion intercepted a group of rebels under the command of Maj. Opoka near river Aswa.
Regional army spokesman Lt. Kiconco Tabaro said six rebels were killed in Kitgum, when they attempted to attack Lagoro camp in Kitgum Matidi and Mucwini camp.
He said six other rebels were killed at Lolim and Kololo in Purongo sub-county and Pajok I in Murchison Falls Park in Anaka sub-county in Nwoya county.
Tabaro said at Paluda village in Palabek sub-county in Kitgum, the UPDF intercepted a group of rebels, killed some and recovered two guns.
Tabaro said the army ambushed another group of rebels east of Mucwini camp in Chua county, Kitgum. The rebels wanted to raid the camp. Two rebels were killed and two guns were recovered.
He said another group of rebels attempted to attack Lukung camp in Kitgum district but it was repulsed by the soldiers who killed one and captured another one with one rifle.
Tabaro said, “They wanted to sneak into the camp and loot food as people were going to their gardens.”
