Apr 12, 2005
DEAR Doctor,<br>Since my early teens, I have been disturbed by a recurring ringworm on the skin.
DEAR Doctor,
Since my early teens, I have been disturbed by a recurring ringworm on the skin.
I have tried several remedies, but it comes back.
How can I have it cured completely?
Andrew
Dear Andrew,
Ringworm of the skin is an infection caused by a fungus.
It is usually picked from our environment; contact with people, pets, soil and other objects that have the fungus.
They are easily treated with anti-fungal ointments or creams that one can get at a pharmacist’s.
Some people may get a problem with the fungus coming back and these can be handled in the manner below:
Apply the cream or ointment at least once daily until the skin rash disappears.
Continue applying the ointment for one to two weeks after the rash has disappeared to remove fungus hiding in the skin.
Make sure that you have a bath at least daily to remove flaking skin.
Do not us antiseptic soaps all the time.
They remove good bacteria from the skin, making it easier for harmful bacteria and fungus to grow. Use un-medicated soap .
Wash and hang out in the sun or iron all clothing at least once to remove any fungus that may be left in them.
If the rash does not show any improvement after two weeks of treatment, consult a doctor.
She will confirm the diagnosis, and prescribe other ointments or tablets for you.
Treatment with tabs may take a few months.
Do not use steroid creams without the doctor’s prescription.
Generally speaking, fungal infections need persistence in treatment for them to heal completely.
