JIMMY Akena, son of former president Apollo Milton Obote, yesterday arrived home, ending almost 20 years of exile.
Akena arrived at Entebbe Airport at 6:35pm aboard Kenya Airways.
Accompanying him were former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) youth leader Stephen Mila Omule, in his 60s, and Joseph Othieno Pinytec, a former London bureau chief of the defunct UPC Presidential Policy Commission, in his 40s.
Dressed in a red, cotton, short-sleeved shirt and a party T-shirt with the UPC open-hand symbol close to his heart, the visibly happy, dread-locked Akena declined to talk to the press at the airport.
“I am happy to be home at last. I will make a statement later,” he said.
Akena’s cousin, Charles Akora and UPC leaders Hajji Badru Wegulo and Kilama Moro received him. There were also a handful of party supporters present. They broke into party jigs and ululation, almost bringing business at the airport to a standstill.
Akena left for Kampala driven by Moro in a blue Toyota Corolla UAE 911V. His entourage followed in three cars and one omnibus.
Akena was due to be hosted to an informal welcome party at Uganda House yesterday evening.
Sources said Akena would temporarily be accommodated in a flat at Uganda House, which is reserved for the party president.
UPC youth activist Patrick Aroma said he did not want to make any political statement and the other UPC officials also refrained from making any comments.
The completely gray-haired Omule, who has been living in exile in Zambia with Obote since July 1985, looked exhausted.
