Mocked as fake by the press last year and reviled by some artistes, who walked away empty-handed, the Pearl of Africa (PAM) Awards’ reputation seemed to have been blotched.

The awards organising committee and main sponsors Bell and Celtel have responded in kind this year. They are set to kick off tonight in Jinja.

All indications are it will be bigger than last year’s. Bell is the first to make clear their intentions. They painted the town yellow with posters and fliers last Tuesday to hype the mood for the pre-launch party dubbed ‘The Bell PAM Awards Diamond Production Party’ that will be held at the plush lakeside resort called Cool Breeze.

The party is expected to be a blowout because Diamond Productions has been carted in one of the most live wire acts in the country featuring Kato Lubwama, Rebecca Jingo, Roy Kapale, Kabuye Semboga, Martin Angume and Doreen Mutiibwa, among others.

Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone and Ragga Dee are some of the artistes expected to grace the bash. Entry fee is sh3000. “Our goal is to launch the PAM Awards with pomp that befits it. We want to make it bigger than last year,” said UBL’s Oscar Mulira.

Tomorrow night, Jinja will again be electrified when PAM Awards is launched at the Crested Crane Hotel at 8:00pm.

“We believe Crested Crane will be refreshing for a lot of people because it is fine venue and outdoors,” said Isaac Mulindwa, PAM Awards organising committee chairman.

“For any artiste to perform on Saturday, they will have to register with NBS Kodeyo FM and Kira FM first.”
