Since 1962, Uhuru Restaurant has been in the same location along Abbey Kafumbe Road.

Off hand, to the best of my knowledge, there are only two other eating joints that have the merit of still being where they were founded; City Bar on Kampala Road and Nalongo Burkirwa over at Katwe.

Back to Uhuru, from what I understand that area off Namirembe Road and adjacent to Blue Room, though hardly considered Park Avenue or Knightsbridge, in days gone by, was trendy enough to have the Aga Khan build a mosque up the street not to speak of Nakivubo Stadium.

Notwithstanding, over the years, the neighbourhood has become run down and congested resulting in a diner being disenchanted.

The burgeoning boda bodas and cyclists that abound all over the place, making ordinary navigation risky and unsettling, do not help matters.

Well, all that has changed in one fell swoop and last week saw the birth of the brand new Uhuru Executive that is not only semi-alfresco, but it is more airy and trendy than the former.

Admittedly, mid-town Kampala is ever so crowded and eating-places are a dime a dozen, but then again this is where the money and action are found.

In any case, with so many storied buildings mushrooming all over the place, there is bound to be demand for food that is anywhere between sh2,000 to sh4,000 while at the same time not being in a converted shop.

Straight off the bat, Uhuru Executive has a decided advantage over the joints that operate around him in that the place was purposely built as a take-away proper with ventilation being well catered for unlike the competition.

In keeping with the new spirit, they have introduced a new menu that incorporates the best of the old along with the staple runners that are to be found in any takeaway.

These include chaps, kebabas, samosas, eggs, sandwiches, assorted juices, milk shakes and so many other items too numerous to mention. Naturally, it goes without saying that the cornerstone for Uhuru’s success has always been the pilao and for those aficionados and devotees of this type of food you will not be let down.

The place gets busy and you will have to make do with sharing a table. The service is swift and you have to pay while making your order. The terrace is small and offers a nice breeze on a hot day.
