Did Nsibambi really say so?

SIR — How is the Government and in particular Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi going to explain to the tax payer that their hard-earned money is going to buy better vehicles, so that ministers can travel in comfort on Uganda’s bad roads? Since Nsibambi acknowledges that the roads are full of potholes, something should be done about them before the ministers buy themselves new and expensive Land cruisers, otherwise their new vehicles will not last very long. All Ugandans have a right to travel on good roads and in comfort. Could the good professor really have said this? If it is true, it is most unfortunate, to say the very least.

SIR — Prof Apolo Nsibambi is a very nice and polite man and treats people with respect. He taught me at Makerere. It is for that reason that I am deeply disappointed if he really said that Land Cruisers should be bought for ministers because of Uganda’s bad roads. Is that how high office changes people?
