THE Bombers head coach Dick Katende disclosed at the weekend that he would not rest until Uganda parades five or more boxers for the world boxing championships in Beijing later in the year.
Katende's latest strategy followed the team's exemplary performance in the Africa Zone V boxing championships that ended in Nairobi Friday with Uganda finishing second after scooping four gold, five silver and one bronze medal.
The heroic performance saw Uganda send nine boxers to the African championships in Morocco May 25-June 10 that will be used to select 22 boxers to represent Africa at the world event.
Kenya produced ten boxers to the African event while Rwanda, the only other country to feature in the Nairobi event, will send two.
Although the overall title eluded him, Katende was happy with the results exhibited by his boys saying if it were not for the problem of finances that saw them come close to being “forced†back home, they would have done wonders.
Uganda paraded nine boxers out of ten who made up for Nairobi. All of them will carry the country's flag to Morocco.
Gold medallists were Jolly Katongole (l/fly), Martin Mubiru (fly), Shariff Bogere (feather) and Solomon Bogere (light). Silver medallists: Amza Wandera (middle), Taibu Mayanja (l/heavy), Eddy Okora (l/welter), Mike Obin (welter) and Mike Sekabembe (superheavy).
The Bombers were rescued by the Ugandan community in Nairobi who held an impromptu fundraising to bail the team out.
