FORMER Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels want the 2006 general elections cancelled to maintain President Yoweri Museveni in power.

A former LRA commander, Lt. Col. Francis Okwonga Alero, made the remark while addressing displaced persons at Agoro and Madi Opei IDP camps in Kitgum district recently.

“If we get a new leader at this time when the war is almost over, it might get more complicated,” he said.

Okwonga was flanked by colleagues Brig. Kenneth Banya and Ray Apire, who accompanied the state minister for northern Uganda reconstruction, Grace Akello, to a peace mobilisation tour of Kitgum district last week.

He said the northern insurgency had taken long because some politicians contributed to it.

“Politicians used to call us (on phone), urging us to fight on because President Museveni was about to be overthrown.

"Kony refused to sign peace talks because the politicians told him not to,” Okwonga said.
