THE Sports for Peace programme in Karamoja, along with Kenyan legendary marathon runner Tecla Lorupe’s peace initiative, will hold a marathon event in Karamoja April 30, reports Paul Mbuga.

According to the programme’s public relations officer, Tolit Olwuor, the principal objective is to foster peace between Moroto, Kotido and Nakapiripirit districts, which have for long been engaged in a simmering cattle conflict.

Lorupe’s involvement follows existing cross-border tensions between her home district (Pokot) and other Ugandan tribes.

The Karamoja Peace Programme is sponsoring the participating teams. A total of 30 warrior-athletes, ten from each of the three Ugandan districts, are scheduled to participate. Selection races were held early this month, with bicycle races as curtain raisers.

Lorupe herself and members of the diplomatic corps in Uganda are expected to attend the event.
The Karamoja initiative is fully funded by the European Union and the Uganda government.
