THE reconstruction of the Jinja bridge is to cost sh40b, works and communication minister John Nasasira has said.

He said expert divers from Britain would examine the strength of the pillars underneath the Nile waters next month.
He said the project requires sh3b to redesigning the phases of construction and sh5b for minor renovations.

Nasasira told the Parliament works committee on Tuesday that last year, there were reports that the bridge was a threat to road users.

“These were exaggerations the situation. When engineers examined it, it was not so bad. However, I don’t deny it’s weaknesses,” Nasasira said.

He said engineers discovered that the outside shrubs on the pillars shake when heavy trucks pass.

Nasasira said the Government had contracted Traveaux Public, a South African-based company and H. Young of Kenya to reconstruct the Jinja-Iganga Road.

The Road Agency Formation Unit director, G. K. Foulds, said Basil read-Bouygnes of France had been contracted to construct the road but its contract was terminated over shoddy work.

The MPs on the works committee chaired by Nathan Byanyima (Rukanga county) were meeting Nasasira to discuss the 2004/2005 budget allocations to the ministry.

Byanyima said the money allocated to the works ministry was always reduced.
