The United States Department of State and the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) are developing an apparel trade information repository and a website.
“The goal of this project, estimated to cost over $230,000 (sh420m), is to create trade opportunities between Uganda and US firms, which translates into economic growth,” a statement issued by UIA on Friday, said.
The statement said the project would increase income and employment in textile and apparel sectors through exports by taking advantage of market access provisions of African Growth and Opportunities Act.
Other benefits include building mutually beneficial relationships between the traders and enhancing Ugandan trade associations and UIA to participate in global textile and apparel markets.
UIA’s executive director Dr Maggie Kigozi said the project was an important manifestation of president George Bush’s trade legislation, which provides market access for 38 sub-Saharan African countries.
A five-stage activity timeline for the grant started this month with five US delegates travelling to Uganda to plan with UIA.
