SIR — A true MP should emulate Mr Emmanuel Dombo. Uganda would be a wonderful place if leaders truly represented the views and aspirations of their constituents! The problem with our leaders has always been fronting what suits them first and then thinking about their subjects first! Dombo has done the right thing. Ntegye Asiimwe ntegyeasiimwe@yahoo.co.
SIR— I have read Mr Emmanuel Dombo’s explanation as to why he quit FDC. I groaned over the extent of selfishness among our leaders.
Can somebody out there, please explain to me the roles of our leaders in the political development of this country? We all know that Uganda’s illiteracy rate is very high, and that we lack civic education. The equivalent of civic education has remained in instructing people on how to vote (ticking). People are consequently ignorant of their rights and duties and the duties of public authorities.
For example, many do not know their duties as citizens. That is why paying graduated tax, for example, is a problem! they do not know what they should expect from their communities and government. This is why you find people supporting “public thieves†calling them clever.
If one criticises a person over embezzlement of public finance, one might be reminded of nugu (jealous). Consequently, there is only limited public voice to demand for accountability of public members of society.
And the economy continues to bleed under the unprincipled behaviour of such people. How do the knowledgeable people contribute to good governance, which goes with accountability and sharing of information?
I groaned over the fate of Wasswa Ziritwawula who, early in the regime, demonstrated that selfishness was bad! If the present opposition looked at Ziritwawula as a principled and objective politician we would have really achieved so much.
Mr Dombo, what is the role of government, if it is not to provide such services as the present regime is providing to the people in Bunyole?
Why are you withholding information from them? It is good Dombo has been honest about protecting his political career by choosing not to explain to his constituents his position but merely accepting what they wanted.
After all he was just their representative and they are the ones who elected him.
