The Straight Talk Foundation is to sensitise 1,050 primary school teachers and students on adolescent reproductive health in Mbale district.
A statement issued by the foundation said the workshops take place this month.
The statement, quoting Jane Namunane, the district population officer, said about 60% of girls get pregnant before the age of 19 and about 23% of boys have multiple partners. Over 60% of boys and girls have unprotected sex.
Circumcision is also cited as a major transmitter of sexually transmitted diseases.
“During circumcision, there is casual sex and taking of alcohol. Youth spend days and nights dancing away from home,” the statement said.
It said Mbale district leaders recently expressed concern about sex in schools, especially in poorly supervised hostels.
“Many youngsters engage in sex for money,” the statement said.
The Straight Talk foundation is an NGO that deals with adolescent sexual and reproductive health education.
