DEAR doctor, I am a female aged 23 with a problem in my anus. It got swollen and it would pain me whenever I went to the toilet. Then it subsided but I still feel the pain during my periods. It swells like a big pimple. But it does not stop me from easing myself. What could be the problem? Elina
Dear Elina, Your problem could be piles (haemorrhoids) that healed spontaneously.
These are swollen veins in the rectum or anus, the type depending on where it occurs. Veins inside the rectum may bleed painlessly, sometimes stretching down until it bulges outside the anus resulting in a prolapsed haemorrhoid.
You may feel a painful lump on the edge of the anus if a blood clot forms especially after bowel movement, as bright red blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet. It may result from straining when trying to empty the bowels especially when constipated or in case of diarrhoea.
It can happen when one sits on the toilet for too long. It may also run in families. Mothers, who have given birth several times, may develop the condition due to strain.
Other causes include overweight, lifting too much or standing for too long. External haemorrhoids involve the veins outside the anus.
They can be itchy or painful and can sometimes crack and bleed.
Untreated external haemorrhoids may eventually shrink to form harmless skin tags.
To avoid haemorrhoids, take in more of yellow bananas, fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, a lot of fluids and water to avoid constipation. Answer natural calls immediately, exercise regularly.
Avoid laxatives, they can lead to diarrhoea, and worsen haemorrhoids. Avoid self-medications and consult medical personnel if there is anal bleeding. Dr Herbert Mugarura
