SIR — The recent fuel price hike has left me wondering what Uganda is up to.
SIR — The recent fuel price hike has left me wondering what Uganda is up to.
How far will this go on? The cost of electricity and fuel is beyond comprehension. The cost of fuel even in Rwanda our landlocked neighbour is far cheaper than here. The fuel to Rwanda passes through Uganda, so why is it cheaper in Rwanda?
How do we expect to eradicate poverty when paraffin costs sh1700? That is almost a dollar! People in rural areas can hardly afford this! How can rural electrification take place when the cost of a unit of electricity for domestic use is sh212? Most of the people in rural areas are poor peasants who cannot afford to spend a dollar a day.
They depend a lot on their children working in towns and cities who are also overburdened now by taxes, inflation, and fuel price hikes! The Government should stop this greed and reduce the taxes on fuel otherwise our dream of poverty eradication is getting derailed. Lydia Mango Nansana
SIR — I can’t dispute the fact that public service vehicles are a blessing to most ugandans. This is because they are the only alternative to the majority of us. But this is no reason to impose ridiculously high fares on poor people by hiking fuel prices. The price of almost everything has gone up without a corresponding increase in wages and salaries.
This is becoming unacceptable and unbearable. This talk on the referendum should be put on hold and the government should tackle these hurdles head-on. The Government does not seem to realise that there is increasing alarm as a result of its apathy to the plight of Ugandans.
