SIR— On April 26, Mr Abu mayanja wrote an article entitled “Why was the speaker involved in the MPs’ arrest?” Mayanja was referring to the arrest of Mr Reagan Okumu and Mr Michael Ocula. I wish to make it clear that the Speaker was not involved in the arrest the MPs.

Letters of the kind Mayanja refers to in his article are addressed to the concerned members and only copied to the Speaker or are addressed to them and routed through him.

This kind of communication has happened many times before when the police have sought interface with MPs. They do so either as a matter of courtesy to the Speaker or to remind the MPs to do what is required of them, through the speaker’s Office.

Sometimes the police ask the Speaker to bear upon the MPs to respond fast enough.

It is only to this extent that the presiding officer gets involved in such matters. I invite Mr. Mayanja to look at the day’s Hansard where the Speaker explained the circumstances of the MPs’ arrest.
