THE Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has won global recognition for good governance.
Speaking yesterday at an exhibition at Garden City in Kampala to launch the International Red Cross week, the health minister, Jim Muhwezi, said URCS compliments government efforts.
The theme of the celebrations is “40 years of humanitarian service - renewing our commitment.’’
Muhwezi, who was representing Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, commended URCS, saying their humanitarian assistance contributes to the policy on disaster preparedness.
“This is a spirit which should be emulated,’’ Muhwezi said, adding that the award shows 40 years of transparency and accountability.
Tim Lwanga, the ethics and integrity state minister, Kampala City Council’s Takuba Kabuye and several dignitaries, including the EU’s head of Mission, Sigurd Illing, attended the ceremony.
Other activities to mark the week will include blood donation drives across the country, youth mobilisation and public awareness on the mandate and function of the URCS.
The week will also feature a fundraising drive for the internally displaced people in northern Uganda, a statement from URCS said.
Abbas Gullet from the Kenya Red Cross, who also represents the committee that awarded Uganda and three other countries said URCS attained the highest score of more than 70% out of the countries that were assessed. He said the recognition was valid for 12 months.
He said the award stands for good internal management, accountability and transparency, which donors demand from their clients.
