TWO names that dominated the headlines in the late 1980s and early part of the 1990s, SC Villa and Liverpool, have defied all odds and are back in international news.
Fans in Kampala will recall with nostalgia Liverpool’s John Barnes terrorising English defences on UTV’s ‘Big League soccer’ show at the same time as the great Magid Musisi was considered the most dangerous striker in east and central Africa.
SC Villa and Liverpool have in the past 15 years had less and less impact outside their own countries. While Villa snatched the CECAFA club title in 2003, that paled in significance to reaching the African club championship and CAF Cup final in 1991 and 1992. Liverpool last won the league in 1989-90 and last reached the European Club Cup final in 1985.
SC Villa captain Andy Mwesigwa is doing exactly what his counterpart Steven Gerrard is doing at Liverpool.
Credited for marshaling a defence that is yet to concede a goal in the ongoing CECAFA Kagame club championship, Mwesigwa assured his colleagues that an early goal against Mtibwa would be easily defended. And that is exactly what happened on Wednesday, a day after Liverpool had shown classic defending, on Tuesday.
“Our prayers have been answered and hard work has been rewarded,” Mwesigwa said.
Within a year of taking over, Rafael Benitez has defied all predictions and led Liverpool to the Champions’ League final.
Sam Timbe is doing the same miracle after taking over mid-season. Cash strapped, his young team have not played a single league match due to the disbandment of the FUFA executive and looked no hopers.
Villa official Edward Luyimbazi is optimistic. “If we groom them (juniors) well and get corporate sponsorship, we will definitely be back on the international scene like we were in the 90s,” Luyimbazi promised.
