OVER 20,000 Ugandans depend and earn income directly from the pool table business as proprietors and attendants.

Most pool table operators in the city suburbs charge sh500 a game of between 10 and 15 minutes. This fetches between sh50,000 and sh60,000 a day that runs up to midnight.

In high-class venues like Club Silk and Ange Noir Discothèque, a game goes for between sh1,000 and 1,500. This fetches sh100,000 and sh150,000 a day and up to sh1.5m a month.

“How many people in this country earn sh1.5m a month,” David Katumwa of Katumwa Sports Center, said at the launch of ‘Rent a Pool Table Project,’ a new project intended to boost people’s income through investing in pool tables.

A pool table goes for between sh1.5m and sh5m depending on the manufacturer. A pool table can last between 50 and 100 years with good maintenance.

Katumwa said the new initiative would be useful to youth because they would get monthly income like other persons employed and earning a monthly salary.
“Once you buy a pool table, we secure you a bar where it would be placed,” he said.

Katumwa is the major supplier of pool tables.
