THE finance ministry has released sh1.2b to Mulago hospital, reports Richard Komakech.

Mulago’s administration on Monday issued a circular to departmental heads to use available drugs to cater for only emergencies.

Health minister Brig. Jim Muhwezi said yesterday on phone, “I talked to the minister of finance, Dr. Ezra Suruma and the Secretary to the Treasury and they told me the money had been released, but the process was delayed.”

The New Vision reported on Tuesday that the hospital had postponed several surgical operations following a delayed release of its supplementary budget.

The hospital applied for sh3b as its supplementary budget last December but the money had not yet been availed. The money released was sh1.8b short of the hospital’s request.

“They told me the money was issued around May 5 but it takes some time before it can reach Mulago. But the situation should get better,” Muhwezi said.

Mulago deputy director Dr. Gideon Kikampikaho said the cash strain was caused by an influx of patients at the hospital.

Seventy percent of the cases at the hospital are currently emergencies and have to be handled immediately.
