Women’s rugby is particularly important in generating interest in the game from young boys and girls. The women’s rugby team performances have so far been impressive and this is an excellent sign.

“The ladies have been nothing short of enthusiastic. The last thing you should do is stifle them,” he points out.

Owiny succeeded the highly-successful Paul Sigombe as chairman of the URU after winning the elections in the general assembly last month. Sigombe was in charge of the local union for four years.

Owiny has stressed that he intends to consolidate the achievements of the past executive during his term in office.

Owiny underlined the importance of continuity and decried a practice by administrators to tear apart structures set up by their predecessors.

He says he will also focus on young talent and also women’s rugby.

He acknowledges the importance of making equipment like balls and gum shields available to aid the growth of the game in the youth bases.

“With increased numbers participating in the game, quality will inevitably improve with time.”
