TOP super featherweight prospect Peter “Boyz Boyz†Semo earned a hard fought win over Tanzania’s Geoffrey Mawe in an ABU lightweight title fight tune up Sunday night at Sabrinas Pub, Kampala.
Semo, who has been on a long stay in London, had to break an awkward Mawe, who for most of the fight caved in and kept his guard up making it difficult for the home boy to make a quick breakthrough.
Semo, who has had some great fights at Sabrinas pub before, registered his fifth win by a unanimous (298-296) points decision.
“I am glad to be back with a win,†Semo said after the fight “He made it hard for me to fight, he kept his guard up too much.â€
Semo improved his status to 8-0-0 (7 KOs) ahead of the June 18 fight against Africa Boxing Union lightweight champion Abdu Amidu.
The Sunday fight that had no undercard fights was promoted for the first time by woman promoter Sanita Maureen, who is the director of Intersport Promotions.
It was sponsored by Scandinavian Express, Jomayi Property Consultants, Rambo Telecom and Embassy Supermarket.
* Fundraising for Badru Lusambya’s next fight began in earnest with a collection of $900 (sh 1.6m) last week.
Big Strikers, the promoters backing Lusambya, said the money will cover sanction and belt fees for the June 18 fight.
ABU welterweight champion Lusambya 10-10 (9)-0 takes on South Africa’s Tshepo Mashego 19-14 (8)-5 in a title defence at Nakivubo.
Lusambya’s promotions manager Emmanuel Mwesigwa said among the requirements now needed is $5000 (sh9m) for Mashego’s purse.
Big Strikers had initially offered $3000 but Mashego’s team insisted on a bigger purse if their fighter was to make the trip to Uganda.
Mwesigwa was full of praise for international businessmen Jack Kabanda and Ernest Matovu together with journalist Mark Ssali, accountant Jamil Sewanyana and lawyer Kavuma Kebenge who raised the $900.
Meanwhile, Big Strikers have set designing of a website as one of their next targets.
Mashego will be Lusambya’s first opponent from outside East and Central Africa.
