The protracted legal battle over the registration of the Democratic Party (DP) ended yesterday when the warring factions agreed to register it under one application.

This came after DP lawyer Joseph Balikuddembe presented to court what the factions agreed upon. Donge Opar, the lawyer for the other faction, accepted Balikuddembe’s submissions as being true.

Justice Stella Arach-Amoko ordered the factions to withdraw the cases both groups had filed for the registration of the party.
The judge also ordered that the two applications, one filed by Dr. Paul Ssemogerere and Boniface Byanyima as party president and national chairman respectively, Ssebaana Kizito and John Baptist Kawanga on one side and on the other, Zachary Olum and Mariano Drametu, the vice-president and secretary general respectively, be merged and processed to form one application under which to register the party.

“Prof. Frederick Ssempebwa should follow up the registration of the party and keep the certificate until the party delegates’ conference is held,” Arach-Amoko directed. Ssempebwa, who has been the mediator of the warring factions, was also present in court.
