WORKS minister John Nasasira yesterday lashed out at opposition politicians for likening the Movement government to past dictatorial regimes of Emperor Jean Bedel Bokasa of Central Africa and the apartheid regime of South Africa.

Speaking at a symposium to commemorate the World telecommunications Day at Kampala Sheraton Hotel, Nasasira said the move was an act of desperation and “is unthinkable and unfair.”

“For all the sacrifices made, infrastructure put in place and stability, I cannot imagine how someone can compare this government to those two regimes with a murderous record,” Nasasira said.

The symposium is a run-up to the World Summit on Information Society.

Nasasira said the opposition was abusing the information technology brought in by the Movement.

“I get amazed at some of my colleagues in the opposition who go on radio talk-shows and compare this government to that of Bokasa or the apartheid regime of South Africa. It is disgusting,” he said.

He said desperate opposition creates madness in people.
Nasasira (left) said a new telecommunication policy was to be tabled to Cabinet for adoption in June. The policy will address issues that will spur development through ICTs.

He said the policy would provide easy access to adequate and affordable bandwidth to the entire country starting in July.
