Fresh students joining Makerere University will start a month earlier following the university’s decision to change the schedule for the academic year.
The Joint admissions Board meets today at Makerere University to consider the delayed admission process for the university and other public universities.
Thereafter, Makerere will invite private applicants who make up the majority of students.
In a circular to all staff and students of Makerere University, Academic Registrar Amos Olal-Odur said the 2005/2006 academic year will begin on Saturday, August 13, when fresh government-sponsored students report.
Semester One for fresh and continuing students will begin on Saturday, August 20, after a one-week freshers’ orientation.
The students usually begin their first semester mid to late September. The first semester, which takes 17 weeks, will end in mid-December instead of mid-February as has been the case.
Olal-Odur said on March 7, 2005, Makerere University Council decided to change the academic year schedules with effect from the 2005/2006 academic year.
Semester Two of the same academic year will now begin in early February instead of mid-March and end in early June instead of the usual mid- July. The recess term (for students who do industrial training and or apprenticeship) will begin early June to mid-August, instead of the usual mid- July to late September of every year.
The circular dated May 16, said Semester Two will begin on Saturday, February 4 and end on Saturday June 2.
The Recess term will begin on Saturday 2nd June to Saturday 12th August 2005.
