SIR — On May 6, someone wrote a letter entitled “UNEB registration fees are a mystery”. The writer was concerned about the disparity in the registration fees paid for UNEB examinations. First of all, UNEB writes a circular to all headteachers of secondary schools, district education officers, district inspectors and all examination centre supervisors every year informing them of the registration fees of various levels. The charges are uniform for all schools.
What causes variations is not UNEB but circumstances of registration within individual schools. These circumstances include
distance from UNEB headquarters and a particular school. It is the candidates who pay for the transport.
The population of the school also has a bearing on the costs.
The population of candidates may vary from five to 200. The costs are divided among the candidates to cater for transporting the teacher in charge of registration.
The number of subjects a candidate registers for also matters.
Each subject has a fee. The minimum number of subjects candidates register for is eight and the maximum is 10. Some parents delay to pay registration fees for one reason or another and are fined by UNEB.
The fine for late registration is 50% of total registration, under protest fee which is 10,000 per paper. I would advise any parent who has a complaint with the fees to ask for an appropriate explanation from his or her child’s headteacher.
