By Peter Kaujju TRANSPAPER Uganda with the Centre for Development Enterprise and the Swedish International Development Agency have trained printers in the latest market and quality strategies in the printing industry. Transpaper is a local supplier of stationary and printing equipment. “We are interested in informing people in the printing business about new trends in the worldwide printing industry and how to enhance productivity,†said Ram Kumar, Transpaper’s general manager, during a seminar at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala recently. Kumar said the company initiated the training four years ago and 25 printing companies had benefited from it. During the same function, awards were given to printers and designers, who participated in this year’s calendar award competition organised by Transpaper. Meanwhile, Skilpa Havia, Group Finance’s director, urged the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to help Transpaper get a manufacturing status, which was revoked by Uganda Revenue Authority for allegedly less value addition. “UIA licensed Transpaper under the Investment Code in 1999 to carry out paper conversion. Until January 2004, we had a manufacturing status but the Government revoked it, claiming the company was only cutting paper. UIA should help us,†Havia said. She said they had invested over $1m (sh1.8b) in the company but would take their investment elsewhere if the manufacturing status is not reinstated. Ends
