THE US global AIDS coordinator has commended President Yoweri Museveni and the Movement government for the fight against the HIV/AIDS scourge in the country.

Ambassador Randall Tobias said the exemplary leadership in Uganda had greatly influenced the reduction in new HIV infections from 30% to less than 6% in the last decade.

He was meeting Museveni at State House, Nakasero on Thursday.
Tobias said this was a great challenge to other leaders in the world.

A State House statement said Museveni briefed Tobias about Uganda’s success in checking the spread of the HIV/AIDS scourge, based on past traditional cultural norms that warn against promiscuity and premarital sex.

Museveni said the other avenues for curbing the spread of the disease were political messages at rallies and inclusion of HIV/AIDS education in the school curriculum.
Museveni also briefed Tobias about the ABC (Abstinence, Be faithful and Condom use) strategy which has been used to curb the epidemic.

He said the scourge in Africa was aggravated by some of the continent’s leaders, who underestimated its consequences.
Tobias was accompanied by US under-secretary in the agriculture ministry Eric Bost and US ambassador Jimmy Kolker.
