THE army on Tuesday engaged in a fierce gun battle with the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in Orum sub-county, Otuke and killed two rebels, one of them a commander, reports James Oloch.

It also rescued nine people, including two girls abducted by the rebels in Awapiny parish Abako sub-county in Lira. The battle started at around midday till 6:30pm. The commander was identified as Robert Ogwang of Oyam North in Apac district.

Army northern spokesman Lt. Tabaro Kiconco said the rebels later split into two groups, with one fleeing towards Pader and another towards Teso.

He said Ogwang was killed at Orum secondary school.

A medical officer, George Odongo, operating a private clinic in Orum trading centre, said the battle took place two kilometres from Orum displaced people’s camp.
He said the rebels abandoned their loot, including meat, maize flour and beans.

Kiconco said the UPDF was pursuing a group that had headed towards Teso region.
