THE Sudan ambassador, Sirajuddin Hamid Yousuf, on Wednesday said democracy, border disputes and the promotion of the rule of law remain critical in Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the Dean and the Council of African Ambassadors and High Commissioners, Sirajuddin said there was need to address the issues which “are still areas of concern” despite the success of the AU.

The call came as Africa celebrated the 42nd anniversary of Africa Day, in commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of Africa Union, the forerunner of the African Union (AU).

“We need to ensure that border disputes are appropriately settled to promote democratic processes, firmly regulate electoral consultations and promote the rule of law and institutional procedures,” Sirajuddin said at the Kabira Country Club in Bukoto, near Kampala.

Present at the function were members of the diplomatic corps and the deputy National Political Commissar, Ali Kirunda Kivejinja.

Regional cooperation state minister Augustine Nshimye Sebuturo lauded the AU for its efforts towards consolidating peace, stability and security.

“The work of the Peace and Security Council of the AU is commendable,” Nshimye said.

He said armed conflicts and political tensions were undermining efforts towards sustainable development.
