PRESIDENTS Yoweri Museveni, Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa and Kenya’s Mwai Kibaki are holding a summit in Dar-es-Salaam to discuss the fast tracking of the East African federation, reports Milton Olupot. Museveni left yesterday morning for the two-day summit at the Movenpack Royal Palm Hotel. A State House statement said Museveni was seen off at Entebbe International Airport by Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya. The East Africa Secretariat statement said yesterday the Third Extraordinary Summit of the Heads of State of the East African Community (EAC) chaired by Mkapa was expected to give the way forward. Maura Mwingira, Tanzania’s presidential spokeswoman, said Mkapa would discuss plans to transform EAC into a political federation, with a common currency and constitution by 2010, AFP reported. Museveni was received at the Dar-es-Salaam airport by Mkapa and EAC Secretary General Col. Amanya Mushega, the East Africa Legislative Assembly chief Abdulrahman Kinana. Foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa, finance chief Dr. Ezra Suruma, works, housing and communications minister John Nasasira and that for agriculture Janat Mukwaya were also present. Uganda envoys to Kenya and Tanzania Matayo Kyaligonza and Katenta Apuuli were present. During the special summit held in Nairobi on 27 to 29 August 2004, the East African heads of state resolved to speed up the integration process. Ends
