CITY Tyres will sponsor this years national football league, according to FUFA normalisation committee president Dr James Sekajugo. The league kicks off on June 10. Sekajugo said that City Tyres, a company owned by former SC Villa treasurer Ahmed Umar Mandela, would announce the package at a press conference tomorrow. “We have secured sponsorship for the league from Mandela and (Kavuma) Kabenge told me 10 minutes ago that things were okay,†Sekajugo said on Saturday. Meanwhile, Super Division Clubs Association (SDCA) has asked the normalisation committee to change the date of the league final on August 13 at Nakivubo stadium. SDCA chairman John Mutenda fears that the date was inappropriate because it coincides with the English Premiership opening day — so the fans would be diverted to watch the deeply rooted English league. “We want the opening and final day of the league to be big so you (competitions committee) should change the date,†Mutenda told league committee’s Aisha Nalule. Mutenda was on Friday meeting club leaders over changes the committee has made to the rules and regulation for the league.
DAVID Obua’s Kaizer Chiefs performances next season will be confined to entirely domestic football following the South African club’s three year ban from African club competitions for withdrawing from the 2005 Confederation Cup, adds Fred Kaweesi. The ban means they will not be able to compete in next year’s Champions League or any other of CAF’s competitions until 2009. Ends
