MANY who knew Omar Ahmed ‘Mandela’ well, never ever doubted he would resurface in football one way or the other, after he quit last year, writes Fred Kaweesi.

Mandela as he is popularly known, walked out of his first love SC Villa in April 2004 after being heckled by fans who forced their way into Mandela stadium, Namboole.

He was, as treasurer, insisting on everyone paying to raise enough funds at a football game for his beloved Villa. He swore then, never to return to football.

“I am risking getting back as a sponsor but am doing it because I am part of football,” Mandela admitted.

His passion for the game, and commercial astuteness, led to his re-election as treasurer for three different terms at the club since 1997. Omar speaks his mind and earned the nickname Mandela from his company Mandela Auto Spares.
His profile in society rose higher after he was appointed finance minister of Buganda by Kabaka Ronald Mutebi.
