Richard Branson, the seventh richest man in the United Kingdom and among the richest individuals in the world, is to visit Uganda on an investment-orientated trip.

The self-made billionaire estimated to be worth USD$ 6.5b was invited by President Yoweri Museveni. Branson is the CEO of the Virgin group and Virgin Atlantic Airline, UK’s second largest airline after British Airways.

The invitation was delivered by foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa during a meeting at his residence in London on May 27.

“He is interested in some areas like banking, airlines and telecoms,” Kutesa said yesterday without giving a date of his visit.

High Commissioner to London Dr. Tomasi Sisye Kiryapawo, who played a key role in the success of the meeting, was present. Kutesa said they discussed investment opportunities in telecommunication, air transportation, banking and oil exploration.

On accepting the invitation, Branson articulated the importance of an efficient airline, saying it opened up a nation.

“An efficient airline is instrumental in promoting the country and its interests to the outside world,” he said.

Kutesa expressed the viability of the investment opportunities.
