Celtel's tenth anniversary
Celtel is not dead and neither is it dying. They are here to stay and to make history. As if they did not outdo themselves in the Celtel Mega cash, where Celtel clients won sh100m in eight weekly draws, Celtel 'spoilt' clients who attended the 10th anniversary bash last Thursday at Kabira Country Club.
The list of Kampala's business magnates who've stood by Celtel Uganda since its inception, told part of its success story. From New Vision's CEO William Pike, Pepsi's Amos Nzeyi, Sudhir Ruparelia, Super FM's Peter Sematimba, Gordon Wavamunno and Radio One's Maria Kiwanuka, were all there to celebrate the historic 10-year milestone. Many guests contravened the African dress code, only a few like PAM Award's Isaac Mulindwa in a Kanzu, James Mulwana, Charlie Lubega and Celtel's Cesar Mloka sparkled in their outfits.
Even when board chairman, James Mulwana, highlighted the milestones attained in 10 years, he was addressing a converted crowd. Chief guest Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi enthused the crowd with his usual repertoire of jokes and lugubrious lingo.
State Minister for transport Andraule Awuzu went one better when he told of how they used to queue for 2-3 days at Arua post office just to make a call to Kampala. This was before Celtel came into the picture. A giant Uganda shaped cake showing Celtel's coverage in Uganda was served and it was adieu from most patrons.

A-Team bags sh1.2m
Eight weeks ago, the Y'ello Bowling league at Alleygators started with aplomb and on Thursday night, it ended in equal measure. A-team, marshaled by captain Minex Karia, emerged victors, a feat that saw them bag sh1.2m (which they pledged to donate to the internally displaced persons) and fully connected mobile phones from MTN. Ironically, the biggest celebrants were not the eventual winners, but peripheral performers - Team Capital, (Gaetano and Olanya) Sanyu Fm (Seanice) and Stanbic bank, (Kagaba) who, realising their ineptitude on the bowling alley, challenged for honours in a karaoke competition. Seanice won a prize for her musical talent. Hot favourites slingshots who lost to A-team had a consolation in team player, Wac, who emerged overall top scorer. he won a trophy and airtime. A-team's Alice Basemera swept the female category. The New Vision's George Ssemanda was voted quietest bowler. Kagaba, won the Karaoke star turned Bowler award.

Pastor Robb Thompson's
miracle corporate dinner

DURING last week's corporate dinner at Sheraton's Rwenzori Ball Room, Dr Robb Thompson, one of America's eloquent speakers on leadership and relationship skills, spoke with the spirit that matched his reputation. "I believe, corporate Uganda, that this is the time to stand up and make a difference.
"We need to generate a debate so that we take advantage of the peace and tranquillity to turn this nation around," pastor Robert Kayanja said to a rapturous applause as he invited Dr Thompson to show them. "Every person in this room is looking for something and that is the desire to find a person who is a real problem solver.

"Tonight my desire is that you will be able to come to a place where you discover that you need a problem solver, but also you need to become a problem solver."
Thompson revved through 20 principles; at times compelling laughter, nods and claps of approval.
It was hard to imagine that after him, anyone would impress.

'Mrs Carruthers is black'
Tell my wife that this is only a journalist", John Carruthers kept on explaining to guests during an exclusive interview with a lady journalist. Without reading a line from his new book, such statements made it clear this should be an intriguing piece of literature. He launched his book, Mrs. Carruthers is Black, at Just Kicking bar in Kisementi. There were no speeches and no guest of honour. All night the talk was about Mrs. Carruthers is Black and John Carruthers.

Having lived in Uganda since 1963, it is interesting to see how he mingles European storytelling techniques with those known to be Ugandan. And for this, within the first hour, the guests had bought more than 40 copies of the book.
