A four-inch height deficit will be one of the obstacles Badru Lusambya will have to overcome in tonight’s Africa Boxing Union (ABU) title defence against South African Tshepo Mashego at Nakivubo stadium.
At 5 feet 11 inches Mashego will take to the ring with a reach advantage over Lusambya, who stands at 5’7. But a confident Lusambya yesterday said boxing is not only about physique but also skill.
“I’ve fought and beaten even taller opponents,†noted Lusambya citing his eighth round knock out of an even taller opponent in Zambian John Chibuta last year.
Lusambya, 22, is also not shaken by the fact that his 10 fights are half of what Mashego has accumulated in a six-year professional career. “When the first gong sounds, such statistics won’t matter,†he told journalists at Hotel Africana.
The Asiku versus Saulos fight should further spice up the night. Asiku’s fans are anxious to see their idol whom they last watched live in 2000 before he turned professional in Australia.
“I can’t travel all the way from Australia and give my fans a loss,†Asiku assured his fans.
Ring action will be punctuated with comedy from the Amarula Family. Meanwhile, former boxer Godfrey Nyakana opened the fifth ABU convention yesterday at Hotel Equatoria.
