SIR — Thabo Mbeki is a unique African president, after his predecessor Nelson Mandela. It was not a simple decision for Mbeki to sack his deputy Jacob Zuma, but sack him he had to for the greater good of South Africa. The two men worked together for 30 years in the very trying times of apartheid but that did not prevent Mbeki from sacking Zuma. What was the struggle for if it perpetuated what they fought to banish from their midst? Most African leaders are corrupt through and through and personal consideration always stands in their way to do what is right. Most of them are actually worse than colonialists in their greed for power and in their brutality. Mbeki has proved he is not one of them. That is very refreshing for Africa. He has salvaged some of the continent’s dignity.
