SPORTS Club Villa return to the venue where they won the Kagame Cup to seek more glory.
The CECAFA club champions leave today for Mwanza, Tanzania to participate in the Tusker Cup whose winner will walk away with $20000 (about sh36m).
A team of 20 players and five officials travel by road via Kenya for the tournament that kicked off on Saturday. Villa got sh54m for winning the CECAFA Cup title in May.
Villa requested the organisers to revise their fixtures due to the Cranes’ engagement with Cape Verde over the weekend and will now open their campaign against home side Moro United on Thursday.
Other teams taking part are Simba FC and Mtibwa Sugar also from Tanzania, and Kenya’s Tusker FC.
r Villa has opened a fans’ branch in Mityana.
The colourful function that took place in Mityana on Saturday was followed by a friendly football match between home team Mityana Utoda and SC Villa, which ended in a goalless draw.
District sports officer Sulaiman Zziwa hailed the Villa fans for realising that football could only be developed with the involvement of the grassroots.
“I have been in sports here in Mubende for more than 20 years and no super division club has had a branch in this district. I will support any branch that is opened,” Zziwa said.
To assist the branch attain self sustainability, national fans coordinator Eng. Ben Misagga facilitated the branch with 200 kg of upland rice and maize seeds for production. “We now want our branches to engage in production where part of the proceeds will go to the club and the rest remain in the branch.”
