SIR — President Yoweri Museveni promised that he would not run for his final term in the 2001 presidential elections. On that basis many Ugandans voted for him. Mr. Museveni therefore made a promise. As far as Christians are concerned, breaking a promise is the same as telling lies and is therefore a sin.
In Luke 17:1-3, Jesus warns his followers against causing others to sin and recommended a very severe punishment for people who do so. I therefore caution those who are encouraging Museveni to break his promise.
