THE Acholi are set to petition the Electoral Commission against the use of an elephant, their traditional emblem, as one of the symbols in the referendum.
Henry Mukasa reports that Aswa county MP Reagan Okumu was expected to raise the matter in parliament yesterday.
Addressing the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) weekly press briefing at najjanankumbi, Okumu said the Acholi were unhappy that their emblem was being used to represent the “No†vote in the referendum.
“It’s wrong for the EC to use the elephant as a symbol of rejecting the return of multipartyism.
“The moment they see it, they will say ‘this is ours’ and vote for it. It’s an insult to the Acholi. It biases the process,†Okumu said.
The EC said the elephant would represent the campaign for the retention of the Movement, while the tree would represent opening up of political space.
Okumu suggested that the EC uses grass.
Okumu blasted information minister Nsaba Buturo for saying those sounding war drums (opposition) face arrest.
“He is a barking dog, actually he is a stray dog. He just utters and bites anything because he is minister of information,†Okumu said, throwing the packed room into laughter.
