MAKERERE University is to reduce admission of private students by 10%, starting with the 2005/2006 academic year, Parliament heard yesterday.

“The University Council approved that the intake for the private students 2005/2006 be reduced from 13,000 or 14,000 to 11,000 students,” Vice-Chancellor Livingstone Luboobi said.

Appearing before the parliamentary committee on social services, chaired by Dorothy Hyuha (Tororo) yesterday, Luboobi said the reduction was necessitated by lack of space and poor lecturer/student ratio.

Luboobi, who was also presenting the new proposed increased fee structure for private students, said the students would be admitted on merit.

Education minister Namirembe Bitamazire said, “Since the university is experiencing a financial deficit of sh13b, to address quality education, the funds have to be mobilised from different sources.” She said the timing for the hike was politically sensitive.

Although the university officials proposed that the new private students meet the deficit, the legislators said it was unfair.

University Bursar Ben Byambabazi said if the deficit were met by both private and government students, the private student would pay less. Hyuha asked Bitamazire to present the new proposal to the Cabinet that the deficit be met by both categories of students.
