THURSDAY, June 16 was the International Day of the African Child. Children Vision put the following questions to a number of youngsters: Are you proud to be African? Why? Have you ever done anything for an orphan? If you were told to help an orphan, what would you do? This is what they said:
JONATHAN OBARA, 6yrs St Kizito Primary School, P.1 I am proud to be African because Uganda is my country. I have not helped an orphan before, but if I were told to help one, I would first say ‘sorry’ to them because he or she doesn’t have a parent. I would care for them.
BABIRYE NAKABUYE, 11yrs, Kampala Junior Academy, P.6 I like being African. It is good to appreciate the way I was created and I think it is better to be African. I met an orphan, who told me how close relatives were mistreating her. I told my parents and they helped her, now she is part of my family. I could try to take her to the district officer and ask if the government can pay her school fees, because I cannot do much, but I would have to first get permission from my parents. If my parents can help pay then we help her.
LUCKY MAUREEN, 11yrs, St Kizito Primary School, P.5 I am proud being African. It is my mother country and God created me to be African. My parents helped an orphan with school fees. If I were told to help an orphan I would pray for the person. If he or she doesn’t have shelter I would take him or her to my own house if I grow up.
EMANUEL ABWANGO, 9yrs, Shimoni Dem. Sch., P4 I am proud to be African. I have ever encouraged a friend who had lost his mum. When we went for burial, I told him not worry for he would meet her again in heaven. If I was told to help an orphan, I share with him food, play together and try to make him happy.
MATHIAS KATTO 12yrs, Kampala Junior Academy, P7 I am proud to be African, Africa has a culture. I like of kings and chiefs. Being African is good, I am proud of the falls, lakes and the longest river the Nile. I have ever helped some orphans by giving them some of my shoes and clothes, but I first told my parents. If I were told to help an orphan I would go to pray with them on Sundays and also help them with basic needs.
DOLLY DIVIA, 9yrs, Shimoni Dem. School, P.4 I am proud to be African and staying in Uganda. It is a good country, some people help when one is in danger. Yes, we had an orphan in my class. I lent her my books. If told to help an orphan I would keep her in my house, comfort her and tell her God loves her.
MARTHA NAKIBUUKA, 12yrs, Kampala Junior Academy, P.6 Yes, Iam proud to be African, because Africa has got one of the best cultural dresses like the gomesi and also the beautiful bitenge wear. There was a time my mother adopted an orphan. I welcomed the child and watched TV together. I could give her some clothes.
