CRAFTY referendum campaigners on the ‘NO’ side, symbolised by a house, are asking people to choose whether they would prefer to sleep under a tree or in a house, Parliament has been told.

Kumi MP Patrick Amuriat told the House yesterday that the ‘NO’ side was manipulating its symbol to gain advantage in the plebiscite.

The referendum question will be, “Do you support the opening up of political space to let those with alternative interests join other political parties to compete for power?”

The ‘YES’ side, that is for the opening up, is symbolised by a tree, while the ‘NO’ side uses a house.

“Certainly this has not gone down very well at the grassroots. The manner in which the campaigns are going on suggests that the population is being manipulated.

“The people campaigning for ‘NO’ indicate that they would rather have a house than a tree,” Amuriat said.

He said he had reports that there was still intimidation at the grassroots, with security agencies torturing opposition activists.

He cited the case of a 17-year-old student who was grilled by the RDC’s office for reciting a pro-FDC poem.

“Being interrogated by security agencies suggests she did something wrong, causing her psychological torture, which can lead to her failing examinations,” he said.
