Sanyu FM flares up Kyambogo University
If one were to look for the 'happening universities' in Uganda, Kyambogo University would come last in pecking order after KIU, Makerere University and MUBS respectively.
Kyambogo University is socially dead and is best known for harbouring 'serious academicians' whose life evolves around books and bed. Well, if you are someone who still believes in that school of thought, you are dead wrong. Kyambogo University is alive and rocks, that is if the enthusiastic crowds and electrifying performances at the 88.2FM Sanyu Campus Explosion last week is anything to go by.
Ironically, the 88.2 Sanyu FM Campus Explosion at Kyambogo's Nanziri grounds, made previous Campus Explosions at Makerere University and KIU look pedestrian.
It also went well to show how Kyambogo University is grooming musical talent. Performances from students Mr Sayzi and Emma Fabulous, The reason, Mr Guild with Nnenda Kusoma set the tempo. The Jungle Beat Crew, marshaled by Mosh, Dorothy Bukirwa and Rocky Giant found a fired up crowd with sterning performances.
To reward the students for their enthusiasm, the Sanyu FM Crew comprising Seanice Kacungira, Ben Mwine and the UBL team rained goodies onto the crowd like never before. It was like manna from heaven. An emotional Seanice was so ecstatic she confessed to the crowd that it was the best ever campus explosion she has been to.

Uganda storms Maisha finals
In the film industry, Uganda is currently riding on the high. At the time when the country is hosting big shots like Forest Whitaker and Kerry Washington, it only heightens the excitement to hear that Uganda has two finalists in the Maisha film directors and screenwriters' laboratory.
And on this list, Uganda scored the highest, with The New Vision journalist, Geresome Musamali's The Fleas of Ggwangalyange and Joanitta Bewulira-Wandera's Jordana's Inheritance keeping Uganda's flag ever soaring in the skies. Joanita Bewulira-Wandera is also in charge of recruiting for local talent in The Last King of Scotland.
The other two East African countries are also still in the race. Pakistan and India from Asia are also still in with a slight breath. The Maisha advisory committee, which selects the scripts, includes such big names as Hollywood's Spike Lee and Mumbi Kaigwa who should have directed the highly provocative drama, The Vagina Monologues. Maisha is funded with the support of Rockefeller Foundation, OSI Development Foundation, the Pannonia Foundation, Home Box Office, Moonstone International Screen Labs and the Criterion Collection.

Amani, the African opera
Being the first African opera to hit the stage in Uganda, National theatre graced itself for a momentous occasion.
The mammoth crowd, which should have attended did not turn up on the first weekend. But it is as well the crowd was not too big. In a country known for its poor theatre ethics, at least the small crowd behaved professionally.
To say it was a success may be an understatement. The traditional music from Acholi, Rwanda and Western Africa spiced up the sad production. We had heard living in the IDP camps is a nightmare, but the production does not let you sleep.
It continues through this weekend. It is always a confusing experience with such productions. They leave you with pleasure and pain and you will not know, which one wins over your heart. Soul of Africa, the drama group, has relieved us from the out-of-tune musicals by our professional drama groups.

Italians connect
There is a papal credence in everything Italian as was seen at a farewell cocktail for visiting Italian travel journalists at the Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel in Entebbe last Wednesday.
Each of them told a story about Kampala where everyone is a summer bunny and about the mountain gorillas and friendly chimpanzees.
Belgian carrier, SN Brussels arranged their five-day stay to promote the upcoming Rwenzori Centenary. Rwenzori Centenary is the commemoration of 100 years since members of the Italian Royal Family named (not discovered) many of the peaks of the mountain.

Ebonies share
After a successful year with their play, Kalibbobo; Excruciating Conundrum, the Ebonies passed on part of the proceeds to their fans. Last week at Sharing Hall, the fans shared the spoils of sh2m. Kaya Kavuma, the Deputy Katikiro of Buganda, presided over the ceremony in which Henry Robert Bwete won sh250,000, Sophie Nabukalu of Kisubi High School sh150,000 and Jane Nabawanuka sh100,000. The rest of the sh1.5m is to be shared out by the Western, Eastern and Central regions.

Turya triumphs
Everyone is a winner at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) course, Kitante. At the start of the season, telecom giants Celtel Uganda took over sponsorship of month mugs events. Top performers every month score points and those with the highest tally after the last show in December will be crowned. At the June Mug tournament last week, seasoned golfers like John Waigo, Stephen Kasaija, former lady champion Margaret Turyamubugana had a brilliant run on the 18-hole course to win awards at the Celtel-sponsored tournament.

EABL charity
At the launch of a new charity, the East African Breweries Limited (EABL) Foundation, on Thursday at Sheraton Hotel, a jesting Bukenya, who referred to himself as a son of a waragi brewer got plaudits from the crowd, when he recognised the drunkards' contribution to the economy.
"Your initiative to spend 1% of your net profits on community will go well to support the peasantry. We can only ask for more," Chris Emptage, Uganda Breweries MD said. He said community investment is serious issue with them and they are all out to make a sustained positive impact on the communities of East Africa, especially Uganda." East Africa should benefit from our presence. So far we have funded a sh90m rainwater harvesting project in Kabale and sh20m contribution to the Sickle Cell Association among others," he said. Dr Aliker added that the company wanted to touch more lives. We are aiming at enriching the lives of 500,000 needy people by 2010.

Ange and Brad
Just a few years ago, Angelina Jolie thought nothing of tongue-wrestling with Billy Bob Thornton on the red carpet and dishing up ickily intimate details about her sex life. That was then.
Now, the Oscar winner is far more cautious and seems to be gently easing the public into her purported relationship with Brad Pitt by having him join in on wholesome outings with her 3-year-old son, Maddox. Now pictures have emerged of Angie, Mad and Brad building sandcastles on a Kenyan beach during a recent holiday.
