THIRTEEN people died and 9,870 others were diagnosed with malaria in Mbarara district, a health ministry report has said.
The report released on Monday said in the week ending June 29, Mbarara had the highest malaria-related deaths in the southwestern region followed by Bushenyi.
Mbarara district director of health services Kaguna Amooti said most of the dead were children.
Kaguna said the district health department had trained 2,230 people, two from each village, to combat malaria. He said the trainees were equipped with pre-packed drugs to ensure quick treatment.
The district secretary for social services, Clare kab-akyenga, said they had stepped up community sensitisation campaigns.
