LEAF Tobacco Commodities (LTC), the manufacturers of Supermatch cigarettes, have stopped operations following an increase in excise duty in the new financial year.
Starting July 1, the finance ministry increased the excise duty on cigarettes.
A company source said, “We have not been producing since Monday this week because of the increase in tax.”
He said unless the Government reviews the new duty, the consumers cannot afford the cigarettes.
Another cigarette factory, British American Tobacco, suspended operations at the Jinja plant last Friday.
Commenting on the possibility that Uganda Revenue Authority could have had a hand in their closure due to the smuggling of Supermatch cigarettes from Kenya, the source said, “We have been at the forefront of fighting smuggling in this country. That is false.”
