HOSTELS in Kimwanyi zone (Katanga) in Wandegeya, a city suburb, were constructed without Kampala City Council’s (KCC) approval, mayor John Ssebaana Kizito said on Wednesday.
Ssebaana told journalists at City Hall that KCC could not have approved the building plans of the hostels when the land on which they were built did not belong to the proprietors.
“The plans are not approved. I wonder how a businessman could invest huge sums of money in such a project without having approved plans,†he said, adding that if demolished, the owners would not be compensated by Kampala City Council.
Ssebaana said the council only approved plans of developers with land titles or permission from owners to develop the land.
A committee set up by health state minister Capt. Mike Mukula recently recommended that 111 houses constructed on sewer lines in Katanga, including three hostels, be demolished.
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation wants to install new sewer lines.
The hostels likely to be affected are Akamwesi, Taibah and Shariff.
