KAMPALA mayor Ssebaana Kizito has launched the UN-backed annual awareness campaign to protect Lake Victoria afflicted by pollution and environmental degradation from waste and industrial effluent.
He said the campaign, dubbed “the Lake Victoria clean-up week’’, is to create awareness on the increasing pollution threatening the lake.
The UN-Habitat has co-sponsored the week-long (July 9-16) initiative, which is organised by East African communities Organisations for the Management of Lake Victoria Resources and the Lake Victoria regional Local Authorities cooperation.
The Swedish international development Agency is co-funding the clean-up week and other conservation activities linked to the lake.
