UGANDA Athletics Federation (UAF) will field a skeleton team of only five athletes if Moses Kipsiro fails to shave 11 microseconds off his best time needed to qualify for the World Athletics Championship 5000m.

Only Boniface Kiprop (10000m), Wilson Busienei (10000m and 5000m), Alex Malinga (marathon), Dorcus Inzikuru (steeplechase) and Paskar Owor (800m) have qualified for the Helsinki championships next month.

Kipsiro (top) warmed up for his attempt to make the 5000m grade last week when he set a new 3000m national record at 7:44.57 and improved his personal best in the 5000m in London to 13:28.11 ten days ago. He is targeting 13 minutes and 28 seconds in the coming fortnight to make it to Helsinki.

Kiprop, together with Inzikuru, Malinga and Busienei are training in Kenya. “He needed training partners whom he could not get while in Kapchorwa,” explained Kiprop’s Ugandan manager Godfrey Nuwagaba.
